“My parents escaped the communist regime in former Czechoslovakia. I was born a year after they came to Canada in a small town Vernon, BC. We didn’t have many resources, but my dad’s passion was tennis. From a very young age, tennis was all I ever wanted to do, and I dedicated my whole life to the sport. The sacrifices were immense. My dad quit his job, saved up money to spend on my career. When I was young, I never really understood everything. But when I hit my early-to-mid teens, there was definitely some new pressure. Never from my parents or family, but more from myself. I wanted to give back to my family what they had put in. Throughout a player’s career, it’s hard to really say when was the moment you ‘made it’ because you’re also hoping you’re not a one-hit wonder. I had some good results along the way, but the moment where it felt like it to me was the semifinals at the Masters event in Montreal.
